LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach officers are mourning the loss of a K-9 who was killed by police gunfire during a standoff with a knife-wielding suspect.
The Los Angeles Times reports officers located a suspect in a 2014 shooting during a manhunt Tuesday. The suspect fled to a friend’s apartment, where officers set up a perimeter and demanded the suspect exit the residence.
When the suspect finally exited the apartment, he refused police commands to surrender and charged towards officers. K-9 Credo, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, was sent in to subdue the suspect.
The man produced a knife as he struggled with Credo and continued to advance towards officers. That’s when police opened fire, striking both Credo and the suspect with fatal shots.
No other officers were injured in the shooting. The K-9’s handler, Officer Mike Parcells, had previously lost a K-9 in 2005. The police dog was killed by a suspected gang member during a gunfire exchange.
