MEDINA, Ohio — Police in northeast Ohio say they’ve purchased a temperature control system in an effort to prevent another police dog from dying.
Montville Township police near Medina say the system monitors the temperature in designated K-9 cruisers. If the temperature gets too hot, the windows roll down and a fan turns on. A pager system will also alert a police officer.
The purchase comes a little over a week after the township’s police dog Beny died from heatstroke. Sgt. Brett Harrison left the dog in a police cruiser for more than four hours.
Harrison received a two-week unpaid suspension and lost 40 hours of vacation.
Lt. Matt Neil says the temperature control system cost about $2,500. He says the department is dedicated to making sure the situation doesn’t happen again.
