MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio — Police in Middleburg Heights are investigating the death of a motorist who was tasered during a traffic stop Monday night, according to Fox 8 News.
The man, identified as Howard Hammon, 41, crashed into the back of a car that was stopped at the light. During the traffic stop, Hammon was noncompliant toward officers, resisting instructions as police tried to place him in handcuffs.
Hammon had an extensive criminal history that included a number of drug convictions, and he appeared to be impaired at the time of the stop.
During their attempt to subdue him and place him under arrest, officers deployed a taser.
At some point thereafter, he was declared dead, though the cause of death has yet to be determined. An autopsy has been conducted and authorities are awaiting the results.
Middleburg Heights Police Chief John Maddox said that his officers followed departmental policy.
