FLORIDA — A woman who was confronted over the weekend by a former domestic partner who broke into her home and threatened her current girlfriend is actually a longtime Collier County sheriff’s deputy, according to reports released Monday.
And the gun that Deputy Mary Joiner was confronted with late Friday was her duty weapon.
Just before midnight Friday, Joiner and her girlfriend, Bonita G. Dunfee, returned to Joiner’s Naples Park home and smelled cigarette smoke, according to an arrest report. When Joiner walked into her bedroom, she found Rhonda Faye McKinley - her former partner for about 13 years - sitting on her bed.
McKinley, 53, was holding Joiner’s 40-caliber Glock handgun, which is also her duty weapon, reports said.
“Either you shoot me or I am going to shoot her,” McKinley allegedly told Joiner, according to the report. McKinley then pointed the gun at her head.
Joiner wrestled the gun away from McKinley after a brief struggle, deputies said.
Concerned about McKinley’s threats, Dunfee went outside and called the Sheriff’s Office. McKinley then ran from the scene.
When deputies arrived, they found a bullet hole in the closet of the master bedroom, which went through the wall, across the hall and into another wall, reports said. They also found holes punched into the walls, and items belonging to Dunfee, including a $1,000 digital camera, broken.
McKinley, of 645 109th Ave. N., North Naples, later returned to the scene, where she was arrested on felony charges of burglary, aggravated assault and criminal mischief.
According to an arrest report, McKinley’s and Joiner’s relationship ended in May, when McKinley moved out and returned her key to Joiner. Joiner’s and Dunfee’s names were incorrectly redacted from reports obtained by the Daily News over the weekend.
Joiner started with the Sheriff’s Office in January 1997, and is currently employed as a bailiff.
