PONTIAC, Mich. — The Pontiac Police Department said a 41-year-old off-duty Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy is in serious but stable condition after he was shot four times outside of a bar in the city Wednesday night.

Pontiac Police Sgt. William Ware said the man was shot in the hip, leg and both arms outside of Sue’s Bar at 1461 N. Perry shortly after 11 p.m. Ware said the deputy came into the bar, where a pool tournament was being held, and told people he had been shot.

Ware said detectives are trying to determine whether the deputy was trying to help someone outside of the bar, or if he was the target of a robbery. Ware said the deputy works in the parks division for the sheriff’s office.

He said an off-duty Pontiac firefighter, who was a participant in the pool tournament, helped save the man’s life by applying pressure where he was shot before an ambulance arrived.

“The doctor’s said if the firefighter was not there to help the man would not have survived,” Ware said.

Ware said police are looking for witnesses and are waiting until the deputy is able to speak with detectives. He said the case is under investigation.
