PATAGONIA, Ariz. — A U.S. Border Patrol agent died while on patrol near Patagonia over the weekend.

The Arizona Daily Star reports Agent Robert Hotten was found unresponsive by fellow agents Sunday afternoon. Although an official cause of death has yet to be determined, Tuscon Chief Patrol Agent Roy Villareal said during a press conference it appears Hotten fell and hit his head on some rocks while checking on sensor activity.

Agents went looking for Hotten after he failed to answer radio calls. While waiting for medical aid, they administered CPR before Hotten was airlifted to the Nogales airport. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The 10-year agency veteran is survived by his wife, son, mother and brother. The FBI is leading an investigation into his death.
