MIDDLETOWN, NY — A New York state trooper who started his policing career working at the Middletown and Liberty barracks died Tuesday morning after a car crash, state police said.
Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand was stopped in traffic about 7:45 a.m. in his personal car, waiting to turn from the westbound lane of Route 5S into the Fonda barracks to report for work, when a box truck rear-ended his vehicle, pushing it into the path of an oncoming pickup truck, state police said.
VanNostrand, 36, was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
VanNostrand is survived by his wife, their daughter, his parents and brothers, police said.
VanNostrand worked for eight years as a New York State corrections officer before joining the state police in December 2012, police said. Before his assignment to Troop G at Fonda, police said, VanNostrand worked out of Middletown and Liberty in Troop F and at Granville in Troop G.
Police said weather doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash. No tickets have been issued. The crash investigation continues.
