CONEWAGO TOWNSHIP, Pa. — One person was killed in a shootout with police at a roadside motel in Conewago Township Thursday night.
The shooting broke out at 9:50 p.m. at Julia’s Motel at 145 Locust Point Road when police from Cumberland County were attempting to locate a runaway girl at the motel, police said.
Northern York County Regional Police Chief Carl Segatti said the officers from Cumberland County were looking for the juvenile girl and were going to serve arrest warrants at the motel, which sits beside the northbound side of Interstate 83.
But one person, whose name has not been released, “engaged officers in gunfire” at the motel, Segatti said.
Police returned fire, and Segatti said the suspect who fired at police “succumbed” to a gunshot wound.
Although initial reports from York County 911 said a Northern Regional police officer was shot at the motel, Segatti said the report was “incorrect.”
The chief would not release the names of any of the officers involved in the shooting or any other information about the incident Thursday night.
“We’re very early on in this investigation,” he said.
Police taped off a significant portion of the parking lot at the motel and could be seen interviewing lodgers, but reporters were not allowed to get close to the scene.
