PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland police officer was injured early this morning when a car plowed into his patrol car as it was stopped with lights flashing on Interstate 5.
Police say Central Precinct Officer Bill Shaw, 39, was helping with traffic control in the southbound lanes of the freeway near Southwest Hood Street at 1:20 a.m. when the crash occurred. Shaw was stopped with his emergency lights flashing to protect another officer conducting a DUII investigation. Police say while Shaw was sitting in his car waiting for a tow truck, a Honda, driven by 21-year-old Terrence Hoveke, crashed into the rear of his police car.
Shaw was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is expected to be released later today. The police car was totaled in the collision. During the subsequent investigation, Hoveke was determined to be impaired. He was charged with one count each of DUII, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and third-degree assault.
