In the last few years, awareness has increased about the importance of buying Made in the USA products. Whether it is from national “Buy Local” campaigns or New York Times best-sellers like A Year without “Made in China,” Americans want to support U.S. manufacturing and businesses.

In fact, a recent national representative survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center found that when given a choice between a product made in the U.S. and an identical one made abroad, 78 percent of Americans would rather buy the American product. Their reasons ranged from supporting more manufacturing jobs to a higher-quality of product from U.S. manufacturers.

Here are three reasons to consider American-made products.

1. Supports the local economy and families

One of the most powerful reasons to invest in products made in the U.S.A. is to support a local economy. When a local economy is strong, more businesses flourish and can then employee more of an area’s residents—helping the town and families grow.

For example, U.S. manufacturer RMA Armament is located on a U.S. Army base, the Rock Island Arsenal, in the Rock Island, Ill., and Davenport, Iowa, areas.

This lets the company employ local residents, especially those families supporting U.S. military personnel at home and abroad. In turn, these local military families are able to support other small businesses throughout the Rock Island and nearby Davenport areas.

2. Supports U.S.-based innovations

When an American-made product is purchased, a U.S. engineer gets to innovate and stay employed.

U.S.-based innovations are essential to the growth of the country, as it keeps the intellectual property in-house and not on foreign lands.

In the field of body armor manufacturing, it becomes even more essential to ensure U.S. secrets and engineering innovations are kept secure and not outsourced. It safeguards public-safety technology by keeping operations and technical specs out of the hands of nefarious actors.

3. Supports future U.S. manufacturers

When a U.S. company succeeds, it inspires young entrepreneurs to follow in that CEO’s footsteps.

Leading by example is important, and that’s exactly what someone does when they run a U.S. manufacturing company. That type of leadership generates that tough, can-do American spirit—that can lead to the national pride of yesteryears.

Leading by example shows young entrepreneurs that a company can be successful and profitable while employing U.S. citizens. Future startups can have a solid example of how to run a successful, growing company.

These are just a few reasons to support U.S.-made products. Indeed, buying Made in the U.S.A. is an essential consideration when making purchasing decisions for public-safety agencies—from security to supporting the U.S. economy.
