Florida Police Storm Apartment to End Standoff

By Andrew Ryan, Sun-Sentinel (Florida)

Pembroke Pines, Fl. - A dispute between teenagers upended a neighborhood Tuesday afternoon when an attempted assault led to a police standoff, ending after officers stormed a Sheridan Street apartment, police said.

“The victim thought one of the suspects had a gun,” said police Cmdr. Ken Hall. “If the suspects are considered fleeing violent felons, [a tactical team] is standard. ... It didn’t turn out to be what we thought it was.”

No one was hurt, but police expect to file charges against at least two of the three teens, which could include burglary, Hall said. Police did not identify the teens, who are 15 to 17 years old, because of their age.

At 12:37 p.m. police received a 911 call about a possible home invasion in the 10200 block of Citrus Court. Neighbors told police they saw three teenagers run from the house in different directions, Hall said.

The teenager who lives in the Citrus Court home told police that he was embroiled in an ongoing dispute with the boys, who had come to his house to assault him.

He told police the teens followed him into his home, then fled after he called 911.

Police tracked the teens to an apartment at the Lakes of Pembroke housing complex at 10000 Sheridan St., Hall said.

Two of the teens immediately surrendered, but a third refused to comply, Hall said. Reports of weapons - a gun and a baseball bat - prompted police to call in a tactical team, Hall said. Officers set up a perimeter around the apartment building and called in a fire truck and an ambulance.

A crisis intervention team tried to talk the remaining teen out, Hall said.

When negotiations failed, armored officers stormed the apartment and arrested the teen, Hall said. Officers found a baseball bat but had not located a gun Tuesday night, Hall said.
