The Flint (Mich.) Journal

A 23-year-old Tuscola County man is dead after he exchanged gunfire with a Caro state police trooper Tuesday night then crashed his car after a chase.

State police did not say this morning how the man died.

According to police, the trooper made a traffic stop about 11:45 p.m. on southbound M-24 near Bevens Road, and he was shot at as he approached the vehicle. The trooper returned fire, and the suspect’s vehicle took off southbound on M-24 with the trooper in pursuit.

The two vehicles crashed, and the suspect’s vehicle wound up in a ditch on the east side of the highway.

A Caro Village police officer arrived on the scene moments later, and the two officers approached the vehicle. They found the driver dead inside.

The state police crime lab and police accident reconstructionists processed the scene. The case remains under investigation, with an autopsy scheduled for Thursday morning with the Tuscola County Medical Examiner.

The trooper was slightly injured but did not require medical treatment.
