(DETROIT) – The FBI and Detroit police are trying to find 30 kilograms of cocaine that vanished from an evidence room at the police department.
Investigators are unsure when the stash disappeared. It was seized in 1993 and had been stored since then, with records showing it was properly kept with other items that could be needed as evidence. Officers who tried to check out the cocaine last week for use in an investigation found it was no longer available.
The value of the missing cocaine is estimated at $20 million.
The Police Department plans a security upgrade, including cameras monitoring the evidence room. Officials say that was in the works before the cocaine was discovered to be lost.
