LOS ANGELES- An inmate accused of fatally stabbing one guard and injuring four others at a federal prison was declared mentally unfit to stand trial.
Roy C. Green, charged with the 1997 murder of guard Scott Williams, has a mental disorder that prevents him from assisting his attorney at trial, U.S. District Judge Consuelo B. Marshall ruled Thursday. She ordered him to return a prison psychiatric facility for treatment until he is found competent.
Green was serving time at the Lompoc maximum security prison for drug dealing and assaulting officers at another prison when he allegedly attacked Williams and the other officers.
Marshall previously found Green incompetent to stand trial in 2001. Prison doctors declared him recovered a year later, but his attorneys disputed that. Green - also known as Haneef Bilal - insisted he was competent and asked to represent himself at trial.
Williams’ father, Jim Williams, has previously expressed frustration with delays in the case and what he considered Marshall’s bias.
