Court Reinstates Conviction in ‘Suicide By Police’

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The Iowa Supreme Court on Wednesday reinstated the conviction of a Mills County man who authorities said attempted “suicide by police.”

A jury had convicted Drew Young of attempted murder after he opened fire on local police. The Iowa Court of Appeals had overturned the conviction, but the high court reinstated it.

Court records said that in April of 2002, Young “apparently consumed with guilt over his addiction to child pornography” began drinking and confronted police, opening fire on officers in hopes of being killed.

The Appeals Court said Young lacked the specific intent to harm police, a decision the high court overturned.
