MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- A local sheriff’s deputy and a passerby helped subdue a prisoner trying to escape custody after his own dental appointment Wednesday, according to police.
Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandy Brooks was walking two inmates out of the Middletown Dental Group offices 2402 Central Ave at about 2 p.m. when one of the prisoners, Estell Wayne Buck, allegedly made an escape attempt, WLWT News 5 reported.
Buck allegedly tried to grab Brooks’ gun and strangle her by pulling his security waist chain around her neck, police said. She was able to keep Buck away from the gun.
A man taking his wife to the clinic witnessed the incident. After sending his wife inside to call 911, he came to the deputy’s assistance, police said. The two were able to get Buck back into the cruiser.
Brooks received minor injuries to her head and face. She was taken for treatment at Middletown Regional Hospital.
Buck is accused in the March slaying of William Doolittle, a vendor at the Trader’s World flea market in Monroe.
After Wednesday’s incident he was taken to Middletown jail in anticipation of charges being filed by the Middletown Police Department.
