HOLYOKE, Mass.— Holyoke police say an officer crashed his cruiser into an apartment building Thursday night, apparently after he was injured by a man who hit him with a hammer or mallet.
Lieutenant Michael McCoy says the officer is being treated for facial and head wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police responded to the Lyman Terrace public housing complex shortly after 7 p.m. where they found the front of Officer Wilfredo Guzman’s cruiser had crashed through a brick wall and into an apartment unit.
Guzman was on the ground nearby.
A resident suffered cuts from flying glass.
Police say witnesses reported that a man had struck Guzman with a hammer or a mallet through the driver’s side window just before the crash.
A suspect in the attack is being questioned.
