(WATERTOWN, Mass. ) -- Walter T. Munger, a retired police chief of Watertown, died Saturday at his home. He was 77.
Mr. Munger was a native of Pittsfield. He was a 1941 graduate of Framingham High School.
A World War II Army veteran, he received two Bronze Stars for his participation in the Normandy invasion.
Mr. Munger began his law enforcement career in 1951 as a policeman. He retired as chief in 1984.
Mr. Munger was a member of the Bradford Hill golf group and the Restless Rustlers Social Club. He began the Watertown Boys & Girls Club golf tournament. He was past commander of American Legion Post 99 and a member of the Shutt Marine Detachment.
He leaves his wife, Joyce (Brace land); five sons, Bruce of Sullivan, Maine, Brian of Sanbornville, N.H., Christopher, Michael, and Richard, all of Watertown; three daughters, Denise Passaretti of Newton, Doreen Dawson of Watertown, and Deanne Conte of Natick; three brothers, George of Bellingham, and Robert and Fred of Watertown; two sisters, Margaret Burke of Natick, and Sr. Theresa of Watertown; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery in Watertown.
