(RIVERSIDE, Calif.) -- A police officer gunned down when he responded to a call for backup was the grandson of a retired county sheriff and first got involved with law enforcement in his teens as a Riverside County sheriff’s explorer.
The San Jose Mercury News reported that Riverside Detective Detective Doug Jacobs was shot in the head Saturday afternoon by a man who fired as he climbed an outside staircase with a fellow officer. The other officer called for backup while investigating a complaint of loud music at a private house.
The alleged gunman was arrested at the scene.
Douglas, 30, who was promoted to detective last year, was the grandson of former Sheriff George Boutin. He is survived by a wife, son and baby daughter.
