Read Officer Down: Deputy Kelly Fredinburg
GERVAIS, Ore. — A head-on collision late Saturday night claimed the life of Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Kelly Fredinburg, 33, on Highway 99E north of Gervais, Oregon State Police said.
One of the three occupants of the other vehicle died early Sunday at Oregon Health & Science University.
A preliminary investigation by state police, the Keizer Police Department and the Marion County district attorney’s office indicated Fredinburg was southbound with his lights and siren on en route to an assistance call from another agency.
Two northbound vehicles had begun to pull over to the side but a third drove into the southbound lane and the cars collided.
The patrol car overturned and caught fire.
Fredinburg was pronounced dead at the scene. A 19-year-old occupant of the other car died Sunday and another was in critical condition. A third suffered lesser injuries.
Investigators said it has not been determined who was driving the other car.
The identities of the three are being withheld pending further investigation.
