TEMPLE, Texas — A Temple police officer was killed Friday when his escort motorcycle was hit during a funeral procession.
Officer David Camden, 39, was escorting the procession through Temple about 12:20 p.m. when a vehicle in the procession started turning left in the 700 block of North Eighth Street, Temple police spokesman Edward Best said.
The vehicle pulled in front of Camden, who was approaching on his motorcycle.
Camden hit the vehicle on the driver’s side. The crash’s impact threw him from the motorcycle, Best said.
Camden was taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple, where he was declared dead soon afterward, Best said.
Camden was wearing his helmet.
An accident reconstruction team is investigating the crash, and Best said as of Friday afternoon, no charges were expected against the vehicle’s driver.
Camden received nationwide attention in 2003 when he and other officers saved three children and their mother from an apartment fire in Temple, Best said.
He is survived by two sons.
