Woman Robs Bank with Fake Bomb

NORWALK, Conn. (AP)- A female bank robber who claimed she had a bomb, is the focus of a search after she made off with money from a branch of First Union Bank.

The Connecticut Ave. branch of the bank was robbed Thursday, just before noon and its employees and customers were evacuated after the bank robber told tellers that she was carrying a bomb.

“The suspect has been described as a middle-aged Caucasian woman with a cast on her right arm and wearing what appeared to be a brown wig,” police Capt. John Cashin said.

Police said that after entering the bank the woman approached a bank teller with a plastic tackle box with a clear plastic lid.

The woman told the teller that the box contained a bomb and that she wanted him to give her money. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of money to the woman.

After receiving the money, the woman left the bank. The bomb squad was called in and an exam found the device was fake.

“The box contained a 4-inch by 2-inch, brick-shaped piece of molding clay that had fuses from about four fireworks attached to it and several other electrical cords wrapped around it,” Cashin said.
