LANTANA, Fla. — A man has died after jumping from a 50-foot Interstate 95 overpass early Thursday to evade a Florida Highway Patrol officer, state authorities said.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m., a trooper tried to pull over a speeding vehicle exiting I-95 at Hypoluxo Road. The vehicle abruptly stopped in the middle of the ramp and a man ran.

He jumped from the overpass and landed below.

Rescue crews flew him to Delray Medical Center, where he died.

“At this time we don’t have any reason as to why he stopped and jumped out of the car,” FHP Lt. Jeffrey Johnson said.
