LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office plans to saturate busy shopping areas with up to 12 deputies as part of its “Safe Holiday Campaign.”

The campaign begins Friday and will continue throughout the holiday season, which typically sees an increase in shopping-related criminal activity because of an increase in shoppers.

“We believe with the cooperation of the public that we can reduce a lot criminal incidents that might occur,” said Lt. Craig Stansbury, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Stansbury said the deputies have been reassigned from various divisions such as Problem Oriented Policing, Traffic, Civil, Warrants and the Reserves.

The number of deputies working on any given day could fluctuate based on how highly trafficked an area is.

Stansbury also asked for the public to remain aware of their surroundings.
