JEFFERSON, Ga. - A student has surrendered after walking into a high school in northeast Georgia claiming he was carrying a bomb.
The male student surrendered about 11 a.m.. NO injuries were reported.
Assistant School Superintendent Keith Everson says the student has been taken into custody. He says he has NO immediate details about the student or what led him to make the threat. He says the students looks to be about 15, but he has NOT confirmed his age.
The 17-hundred students at Jackson County Comprehensive High School were evacuated along with teachers and staff after the student walked into the office about 8:30 a.m. carrying a device that he said was a bomb.
A bomb disposal team from the University of Georgia as well as officers from other agencies were negotiating with the student and helping in the case.
Everson says the students were taken to the Jefferson Civic Center because of the weather. Parents are being allowed to come to the center and check their students out for the day.
Those students who do NOT have a ride home will be taken back to school, where they will be picked up by their parents or ride buses home at the end of the day.
The school is located in Jefferson, just south of Interstate 85 on U.S. 129.
