DEKALB, Ga. — Man sought is 37 years old, considered armed, dangerous.

DeKalb County police said Wednesday the man sought in the shooting of an officer is a 37-year-old wanted on a probation violation stemming from a drug conviction.

Michael Hughey was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by DeKalb County Officer Deron Fulton about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of Bouldercrest Road. The passenger ran, and Fulton chased him, police said.

The two ended up in a church parking lot, where they exchanged gunfire.

Fulton got off at least one shot before he was wounded.

The officer was hit in the shoulder area, DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parrish said.

Fulton, 24, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The four-year veteran of the force was treated for his wound and was released from the hospital at 3 a.m., Parrish said.

The manhunt for Hughey continues. Police with a K-9 unit Wednesday afternoon were searching around Key Road and Woodham Way, about a mile from the spot where the officer was shot.

The DeKalb County sheriff’s fugitive squad is leading the search. Police said the man should be considered armed and dangerous.
