REGINA, CANADA -- The Regina Police Service has suspended a 17-year veteran officer after charging him with fraud.
Const. Ken John Neufeld, 45, is to appear in court March 19 to face charges of fraud exceeding $5,000 and uttering a forged document.
Neufeld, a school resource officer, was relieved of his duties Monday when charges were laid, said police chief Cal Johnston. Neufeld will be paid for at least the first 30 days of his suspension under the Saskatchewan Police Act.
Neufeld couldn’t be reached for comment.
An investigation was initiated April 25 when police received a complaint from a Regina bank, said Johnston.
“The service received an allegation of a cheque that was deposited into an account that turned out to be not good,” he said.
The cheque was deposited April 22 and funds withdrawn from the account over the next two days.
“It involved a significant sum of money.”
Regina’s police force is already smarting from criminal convictions against two officers in the last six months. A constable with more than 20 years service was fined $2,000 in January for theft of a computer, while another constable was fined $600 last October for drunk driving while off-duty.
The first officer resigned, while the second was suspended but kept his job.
