Houston, Tex. — An off-duty Houston police officer whose car was rear-ended in north Houston early Sunday morning fired a shot that hit the other vehicle as the driver fled.
Officer D.K. Hogan of the department’s juvenile division, in her personal vehicle, was stopped at a traffic light in the 6500 block of Airline at Parker about 2:30 a.m. when her car was struck from behind.
Police said that when the driver tried to flee, Hogan identified herself and ordered him to stop.
Police said the man pulled from his pants an object the officer believed to be a pistol, and pointed it at her.
Hogan, who has been with the department since 1996, fired a shot and struck the man’s car, police said.
The man fled, but was arrested about 90 minutes later in the 700 block of Victory. No weapon was found.
Charges are pending against the man, Miguel Angel Vargas, 26.
