An off-duty Chicago Police officer shot and killed an armed man who reportedly failed to comply with an order to drop his gun and then fought with the officer.

The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 7800 block of South Hermitage in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, Chicago Police said. Authorities are trying to piece together what happened, police department spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

“What we know right now is we have an off-duty officer sitting in his vehicle in the 7700 block of South Hermitage, and the police officer observed the offender walking in that area and he has a firearm on the outside of his trousers,” according to Bond.

“The officer exits his vehicle and follows the offender and asks the offender to drop the weapon. The offender ignores the police command; at that point a struggle ensues,” she said. The officer “fired in self-defense,” killing the man, she said.
