FLORENCE, Ala.- A newly hired University of North Alabama police officer resigned Monday after being arrested on a misdemeanor menacing charge, campus officials said.

Thomas McFarland voluntarily submitted his resignation after his arrest Sunday night at an east Lauderdale County home where his girlfriend called sheriff’s officers after an argument, UNA Public Safety Director James Glasso said.

She left the house unharmed after officers arrived and paid McFarland’s bail Monday morning, Glasso said. He said McFarland was “very cooperative.”
