NEW YORK — An on-duty NYPD cop jogging through Queens during his lunch break was attacked by more than half a dozen strangers in an apparently unprovoked assault, police said.
The officer was jogging near Long Island City’s Pulaski Bridge near 53rd Ave. and 11th St. around 6:30 p.m. Friday when between six and nine young men began chasing after him, cops said.
The 15-year NYPD veteran grabbed one of his attackers amid the punches and kicks, but everyone broke off and disappeared after a witness called 911.
Medics took the officer to a nearby hospital with minor injuries to his head, throat and knee.
No arrests have been made.
The Police Benevolent Association said the beatdown was “an apparently random assault during evening rush hour.”
“If it’s not safe for cops to jog through the neighborhood, what chance do regular NYers have?” the union tweeted Saturday.
