SAN MARCOS, Texas — A San Marcos police officer is facing multiple surgeries after authorities say she was struck by a vehicle as she responded to a call on Interstate 35 Saturday night, according to a news release.
Officer Claudia Cormier was severely injured by the Ford Expedition driven by Neil Sheehan, 58, of Flower Mound, while in the northbound lane of I-35 near Mile Marker 202 about 9:45 p.m., police say.
Police dispatch reported receiving calls that an officer had been hit by a vehicle shortly after Cormier responded to a call of items being on the highway causing a traffic hazard.
When other officers arrived they found the 3-year police veteran with “severe, life-threatening injuries.”
Authorities said she was transported to Seton Medical Center Hays where she underwent emergency surgery. Cormier remains sedated and in stable condition as she awaits further surgeries, according to the release.
Sheehan was arrested by Texas Department of Public troopers for intoxication assault on a public servant, a second-degree felony, and failure to slow causing serious bodily injury. He was booked into the Hays County Jail and results of a blood test are pending, authorities say.
Both SMPD and state troopers continue to investigate.
