SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Cellphone video captured the aftermath of a shootout that left an off-duty San Antonio officer critically injured.
The cellphone footage obtained by KSAT-TV shows people ducking for cover after shots were fired Tuesday night. The footage also shows an unidentified man covered in blood seeking assistance before lying on the ground.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the shooting started as a road-rage incident. The suspect, 25-year-old Demontae Lashaun Walker, became upset after the officer allegedly cut him off on the highway. The chief said Walker and the officer pulled into a parking lot, where Walker immediately shot the officer six times.
The officer was able to retreat to his vehicle and grab his firearm to return fire, shooting Walker three times. The officer was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Police said the officer, an 11-year veteran of the San Antonio PD, and Walker are expected to survive.
Walker has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
