JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A Jersey City police officer fired a shot through the window of a car - injuring a passenger with broken glass - after responding to reports of a street brawl in Greenville yesterday morning, police reports said.
The unidentified officer responded to the fight with the gun drawn, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. The police officer was then bumped or jostled and the gun went off, according to preliminary reports.
DeFazio said that the incident was under investigation. The prosecutor’s office investigates any time a police officer fires a weapon.
Pascal Cenoid, 22, of Clairmont Avenue, was the only person arrested in the incident. He was charged with hindering an investigation after refusing to give information to the police, reports said.
Two police officers responded at around 3:23 a.m. yesterday to a report of a melee at the Van Nostrand and Ocean avenues, police said.
A 27-year-old man, who police are considering to be a victim, said he had gotten into a fight with Cenoid - who was in the passenger seat of a car - over a female, reports said. The fight quickly escalated, police said.
When police backup arrived, they found Cenoid with minor injuries to the right side of his head. The injuries appeared to have been caused by the shattered glass, reports said.
The driver, who police say was armed with a handgun and wearing a white T-shirt, fled the scene after the shot was fired, police said.
The officer who fired the shot was taken to Jersey City Medical Center with breathing difficulties, reports said. Cenoid was taken to the same hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said.
