ALBANY, N.Y. — State Trooper Richard Mattson, shot while responding to the same April 25 shootout that killed fellow Mobile Response Team member David Brinkerhoff, was discharged from Albany Medical Center Hospital Tuesday and returned to his Dutchess County-area home to continue his recuperation, State Police said.
Mattson, 39, was severely wounded during a shootout with fugitive Travis Trim in a Delaware County farmhouse.
Mattson was hit with a slug from a .30-caliber rifle, which police said came from Trim. It entered Mattson’s upper arm, causing severe damage, law enforcement officials said. He underwent six hours of surgery.
Police believe Trim, of St. Lawrence County, shot Trooper Matthew Gombosi a day earlier during a traffic stop in nearby Margaretville. Trooper Brinkerhoff, of Coxsackie, and Trim were both killed in the gun battle, Brinkerhoff by friendly fire.
