6/6/07 P1 News Report: 3 Calif. deputies, K9 shot during domestic
The Stealth Approach
CHICAGO — A 50-year-old woman shot and wounded three Chicago police officers in a West Side apartment building Sunday night before the officers returned fire and killed her, police said.
Two of the officers were shot in the arm and one officer’s head was grazed by a bullet, said police spokeswoman Monique Bond. All three officers were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where they were in good condition later Sunday, she said. One of the three was expected to be released from the hospital late Sunday or early Monday, police said.
The woman was identified this morning by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Dorothy Williams-Johnson. The officers were not being identified.
The shooting occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in the 5000 block of West Adams Street in the city’s South Austin neighborhood.
Four uniformed officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call from the woman’s second-floor apartment, Bond said. When they arrived, the officers saw the woman waving a 12-gauge shotgun out of a window.
The officers were walking up the stairwell of the building when the woman appeared in the doorway and opened fire, Bond said. At least one of the officers returned fire while the woman was reloading, fatally wounding her in the chest, Bond said.
Kenya Miller, who lives in the apartment below Williams-Johnson, said she heard a “loud boom” Sunday night and took cover with her 2-week-old son. Shots came through the ceiling into her apartment, she said.
“We heard this commotion and the shots going down through the ceiling,” Miller said.
