PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — A Pembroke Pines police officer is in serious condition at Broward General Medical Center after he was struck by a car this afternoon when he pulled over on the Sawgrass Expressway to check on a crash.
The policeman’s name was not immediately released and his rank was not available. Officials said his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
The officer was driving an unmarked police car south on the Sawgrass, just south of the Sunrise Boulevard exit, about 3 p.m. when he pulled over in the median to check out a crash that had just occurred in the northbound lanes of the highway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Just as the officer pulled over another driver that was headed south lost control and veered into the median, striking the policeman, said FHP Sgt. Mark Wysocky.
No other injuries were reported in the incident.
