NEW YORK — Cops and criminals aren’t the only ones packing heat in the Big Apple.

Despite tough gun laws and a daunting series of pricey hoops to jump through, tens of thousands of city residents have handgun permits.

“For some city people, the only time they hear about guns is if someone is shooting someone else — they don’t understand the culture that’s involved in the industry,” said Tom King, head of the 141-year-old state Rifle & Pistol Association, to Crain’s.

The NYPD says there are about 57,300 gun permits in the city, which has some of the strictest gun-control measures in the country.
