SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The St. Joseph County police officer injured Monday night trying to get away from a man with a gun on Juniper Road has been identified as Cpl. Michael Moriaty.

Moriarty was released after treatment at Memorial Hospital for a separated shoulder, Sgt. Bill Redman, a county police spokesman, said today.

Police were dispatched to a home in the 53000 block of Juniper just before 6:45 p.m. after a 911 call. During the call, a dispatcher heard a man order someone to put up his hands and get on the floor.

When Moriarty responded, he saw a man come out the back door of the house carrying a gun.

When the man did not reply to Moriarty’s command to show his hands, the officer moved to the side of the house, slipping on wet grass as he did so.

Moriarty fell on his shoulder, but was able to make it safely back to the front of the house, according to Redman.

No arrests were made, but the homeowner was questioned, police said.

Officers found a BB gun in the man’s backyard that looked like a regular gun.
