CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The hot South Texas sun is affects just about everybody - including Corpus Christi police officers.
Police Chief Troy Riggs said a common complaint among patrol officers centers around the unprotected scalps of officers working outdoors.
The department has ordered more than 400 baseball caps for the force, at a price of nearly $2,500, paid for by seized drug money, Riggs said.
The navy colored mesh caps will have the department’s logo on the front.
Officers may wear them only while working on the beach during spring break or when working outdoors for driver’s license checkpoints, approved special events or traffic control operations, according to an internal police memo.
If an officer breaks the rules, they could lose hat privileges for as long as a year or face a day’s suspension depending on the number of infractions.
“We’ve got to make sure our officers aren’t out there wearing them sideways or backward,” Riggs joked during a recent police meeting.
