WAKEFIELD, Bronx — Fourteen NYPD officers were hurt while helping evacuate a burning apartment building Tuesday night.
According to a tweet from the NYPD, officers on patrol saw the fire and went in to assist the New York Fire Department in evacuating over 100 residents. ABC7 reports 14 officers were treated for smoke inhalation.

NYPD Chief of Department Terrance Monahan tweeted his thanks to the officers for their life-saving efforts.
“It’s courageous acts like this that earn our officers the name NY’s Finest,” Monahan wrote.

Two families were left homeless after the fire, ABC7 reports. Officials believe the fire may have been caused by an unattended candle.
