ALBUQUERQUE — Albuquerque police officer Daniel Webster’s relatives, along with officers from several local law enforcement agencies, unveiled a memorial to the fallen officer at the Southeast Albuquerque street corner where he was shot and killed in the line of duty.

The plaque at the southwest corner of Central and Eubank includes Webster’s name and a photograph, as well as an American flag and a short statement thanking the officer for his service and sacrifice. Webster was a U.S. Army and Albuquerque police veteran who was fatally shot during a traffic stop in October 2015.

Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry, Police Chief Gorden Eden and City Councilor Don Harris, who represents the part of Albuquerque where Webster died, spoke during a brief service before the memorial was unveiled. An officer in the Albuquerque police honor guard played “Going Home” on the bagpipes.

Several of Webster’s relatives, including his wife, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy Michelle Carlino-Webster, were among those in attendance Tuesday.

Berry called on parents and grandparents to bring young children to the site.

“Talk to your kids about what police officers do every day,” Berry said. Eden said the department didn’t want to wait long before honoring the officer. “His voice and his influence have not been silenced by his death,” he said. Harris said he used City Coun- cil discretionary funds to pay for the memorial plaque. The final cost was about $2,600, he said, and that includes some materials to replace the design on the plague or make repairs if something happens to it.

“If somebody is successful at vandalizing it, we’re going to replace it right away,” he said. “We really do want it to be permanent.”

Webster was shot after he pulled over a suspected motorcycle thief, Davon Lymon, in October of last year. Webster died about a week later.

Lymon is being held on federal drug trafficking and felon in possession of a firearm charges. Authorities have said Lymon is suspected of shooting Webster, but they are still working to build a case against him. More online
