PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh police were searching for witnesses to a gunfight that broke out near a Homewood bar early Saturday that critically wounded two off-duty Allegheny County constables.

“We do not have any idea at all of what started this,” said Pittsburgh police Lt. Daniel Herrmann.

Both men were taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital. Their identities were not released by police.

One constable, a 37-year-old man from the East Hills, was shot in the side of the chest, neck and shoulder, Herrmann said.

The second constable, a 24-year-old man from Penn Hills, is expected to survive.

The two had been at the Phase III bar at 7236 Hamilton Ave. and left at 1:20 a.m.

“They had been at the bar for three hours, and witnesses said there was nothing wrong, that they were having a good time. As soon as they left, people said they heard several shots outside,” Herrmann said.

Bar patrons heard but did not see the shooting, Herrmann said. No arrests have been made, and police do not know how many shooters were involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Pittsburgh police homicide division at 412-323-7161.
