YORK, Pa.- A teacher’s report Friday morning about a student with a gun at a bus stop led to an hour-long lockdown at a high school, though police later identified the weapon as an airgun.
The ninth-grader returned it to his home before boarding the bus, police said. Still, the incident led to an early end of the school day for some students at York County School of Technology in the York suburbs.
Parents said the incident prompted a “code red” lockdown, with students huddled under their desks and calling their families by cell phone or sending them text messages.
The gun scare occurred less than two weeks after the shooting of 10 students at an Amish schoolhouse in neighboring Lancaster County left five girls dead.
School director James Kraft in York said a teacher from a nearby district reported seeing the gun and alerted authorities. Parents were allowed to take their children home early, but the school day was not canceled.
Marie Lake, mother of a 14-year-old at the school, said students were under their desks for about 45 minutes.
