DAYTON — A standoff Thursday ended with police entering a home in the 500 block of Hall Avenue and finding a man dead from what they believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The situation began about 7 a.m. when a person contacted police and said his neighbor had called and was threatening suicide.
Members of the Dayton Police Special Weapons and Tactics team arrived on the scene about 8 a.m.
Eventually, they entered the home and found the 40-yearold man dead inside.
No official cause of death had been determined Thursday afternoon, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.
Police blocked Keowee Street near Interstate 75 for several hours during the standoff, which ended at about 11 a.m.
Police didn’t go in immediately because the man’s friend said there was a makeshift shooting range in the house and the man possibly owned an AK-47, police Lt. Robert Chabali said. “Occasionally we have someone who wants to commit suicide and will attempt to provoke the police into shooting them,” Chabali said.
