Gayler was shot in the chest and an officer was also wounded by buckshot from Gayler’'s shotgun, but Brown says the officer’'s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Gayler was in critical condition.

The chase began around 3:30 p.m. when police attempted to pull over Gayler, who had escaped from a Seminole County work detail about three weeks ago.
