A man who reportedly made threats to commit a drive-by on an East Side house led police on a high-speed chase this morning through the downtown area before crashing a truck into an Express-News building, police said.
The man, in his 30s, was arrested near the crash site. A passenger in the truck was not arrested. No one was injured in the incident, said Sgt. Joe Hernandez.
Police earlier had responded to a house on Cherry Street for a report that the homeowner’s ex-husband had threatened to shoot up the house, Hernandez said. After the officer arrived, the suspect drove past in a red truck.
The officer pursued the suspect, who pulled over on Austin Street. When the officer ordered him to exit the truck, the man got out and ran. He then circled back to the truck and sped off, leading the officer southbound on Broadway, Hernandez said.
Turning left onto McCullough Avenue, the man lost control on the slick street and crashed into the building, where the now-defunct San Antonio Light used to operate.
The man was arrested shortly afterward. No weapons were found in the truck, Hernandez said. Police plan to charge him with evading arrest.
