AVON AND SOMERSET, United Kingdom — Avon and Somerset police have been awarded a grant of more than £150,000 to purchase 3D cameras that will enable them to clear motorway crash sites quicker.
The two cameras will allow officers to take digital pictures of incidents which can be viewed on computers long after the road has been cleared.
The Department of Transport is funding the £2.7 million scheme which will see 27 police forces benefit from 37 scanners nationwide.
Roads minister Mike Penning said the prospects of long traffic jams will be reduced once the new cameras are in operation, with accidents set to be cleared 39 minutes quicker on average.
Nationally in 2010 there were more than 18,000 full or partial motorway closures across the UK which lasted for more than 20,000 hours.
