ELIZABETH, N.J. — Two Elizabeth police sergeants were in stable condition last night at University Hospital in Newark after their patrol car struck a utility pole, authorities said.
Gregory Polyviou, 42, and Tim Seery, 39, were responding to a report of a disorderly group with a knife at the Oakwood Plaza housing complex in Elizabeth around 5 p.m. when the accident occurred.
The sergeants were traveling down Morris Avenue and made a U-turn after spotting the group. But after making the turn, police said the officers’’ marked vehicle was cut off by a black car leaving the Irvington Avenue Gulf gas station. The officers swerved to avoid the car and struck a utility pole on Irvington Avenue, police spokesman Lt. William Dugan said.
Polyviou, the driver, was rushed to University Hospital with a concussion and internal injuries to his chest, Dugan said. Seery, the passenger, was taken to the hospital with a broken nose and broken facial bones.
Both officers were listed in stable condition last night, Dugan said.
The black car has not been identified, but Dugan said they had a good witness account of the accident.
