Fla. officer hit after Gators’ victory dies

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - A police officer hit by an alleged drunken driver after the Florida Gators basketball championship celebration died Wednesday, authorities said.

Lt. Corey Dahlem, a 22-year Gainesville veteran, was struck by a black Toyota as police cleared the streets early Tuesday after the Gators’ win against Ohio State. Dahlem died Wednesday just before 3 p.m., Shands at the University of Florida officials said.

The Toyota’s driver was identified as Austin John Wright, 21, of Atlantic Beach. He gave two breath tests allegedly showing a blood-alcohol level almost three times the legal limit and remained in Alachua County jail Wednesday on $500,000 bail.
